identify the potential problems with your question and offer a place
to start your research.
Podcasting was still very new in 2004. Many of the top podcasts of
today weren't even around in 2004. In addition, there was very little
press about podcasts, and therefore limited "ranking". For example,
Apple didn't even incorporate podcasting into iTunes until version 4.9
in mid-2004. Also, the iTunes ranking system isn't probably what you
want to use to measure overall yearly rankings because the iTunes top
podcasts rankings is based on a 24-hour period.

A good place to start would be Podcast Alley. Keep in mind that there
is no statistical download or subscription data from podcasts here,
but only "votes" from listeners who listen to the podcast and enjoy
the podcast. You can check Podcast Alley podcast rankings from 2004
at the Internet Archive link I've supplied.
