  • OT: Best photo printer?

  • Okay a little off topic, but can anybody suggest a great colour photo printer for my digital photos? I heard the Canon S530D was really good, but I'm not sure if it's even available in Canada. What I'm looking for is one with a SmartMedia or direct cable input. (Also posted in FT TravelTech.)

  • I do know that to get them printed at Wal-Mart you have to take the files into the store.
I note that in a recent flyer (actually mid-June), walmart indicates an online ordering system at www.walmartphotocentre.ca

The description is, "Visit Wal-Mart Photo Centre online. A great place to print, store and share your photos. Print photos and have them delivered to any Wal-Mart location in Canada. Fix and enhance your images or create online photo albums and slide shows. Do all this and more. Pay in-store. No credit card required for online orders."

"Orders shipped to a store for pick-up will be sent by our internal delivery system: 7 business days for glossy images and 14 business days for matte and gift items." Yeah right.

Their site also advertises in-store processing in 15 stores and counting. Doesn't say which and it isn't clear if one can order online to be at the store in <7 days.

4x6" is 25c per print. www.futurephoto.ca is 39c per print but has faster service.

  • I'm not sure the in-store SDM labs are connected to the website (the way Future Shop is, for instance -- you can upload and then pick up at a photolab-enabled FS 24hr later, or 3 days later at any local FS).

I do know that to get them printed at Wal-Mart you have to take the files into the store. Don't know if it can be on flash media although I assume so. In fact I assume one could take the camera in and the staff would read the files (thinking lowest common denominator here).

So the downside is you have to take them in. On the bright side, our only experience doing this with Wal-Mart was that they offered 1hr service and only charged 30c a 4x6" print! (Okay, the second time the machine was broken and it took a couple of hours). Don't know if all W-Ms have the photo lab, our experience was the one on Decarie in Montreal.

I think Loblaws is the same situation although my new local one doesn't open for three more days but I'll find out (and it would be nice to use the pre-paid 25c/photo card on in-store printing).

One-hour service for 25c. Unbelievable. Blacks must be hurting. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

  • I use the Sony DPP EX5. It produces amazing prints that you would swear were printed at a lab. If there is a con it's that it only prints 4x6. It is a photo printer only, and you can actually use it on your tv, you don't even need to hook it up to your computer.

If I am going to print off a load of pics I usually use FS, but it sure is convenient to have this around. Check it out at the Sony store.

  • I have a Canon i850. It is a great printer 4 ink tanks and a reasonable price. The output on photo paper is exceptional. If you want to spend more there is an i950 with 6 ink tanks but the same printhead and droplet sizes. Obviously these are A4 sized maximum paper.

  • I love my Canon. I had a 4-color model and upgraded to a 6-color unit last year. I was happy with the former but I'm very happy with the latter. My digital prints come up great, and my ink costs are very low. I don't have an LCD panel or a digital memory slot on mine (I would never use it).

The main reason I am such a fan of the Canons is that they have seperate ink tanks for each color, so I only have to replace the tank I have exhausted. The tanks also have no chips or other hardware on them - the print head and nozzle thing is in the printer. More cost savings versus the competition. I could also refill the tanks if I wished for even lower costs per page (I choose not to).

  • I have had great luck using the Canon I950. $299.99 CAD now.

Of course it has 6 cartidges (Black,Cyan,Magenta,Yellow,Photo Cyan and Photo Magenta) and they are each separate so if you do a lot of printing it can get quite expensive.

    Quality is great!

  • I settled on the Canon i860 - $199 from Future Shop. I looked at plenty of HP's with LCD screens at Costco, but figured I didn't really need the added feature. Canon has great reviews & a 4-colour model should be fine for me! Thank you for help, folks!

  • I would say that the best printer is ... a Photo lab.
For $0.29/print at Shopper's or Wallmart, you cannot go wrong.
I have a Shopper's 3mn walk from my place and they print digital in less than an hour. open till midnight 7 days a week.

I know that having a printer at home is great but can you guestimate how much it costs for a standard 4x6? or 8x10?
    8x10 at Shopper's is $2.99.

  • My recommendation would be Epson's line of Stylus Photo printers. I'm a semi-professional photographer, and I just love them. Virtually all the other professional photographers I know swear by them.

There are several models available depending on the largest print size you want to create, all for very reasonable prices and very simple to set up and use. Feel free to email me if you have more specific questions.

  • I love my Epson Stylus (variety of models depending on amount of $ you want to spend). It has separate cartridges for each colour, plus the ink is fade resistant. I only use ot for one of type jobs. After a big trip I take them in to a lab. The last few times I have used Costco, and have been very satisfied.

I have used Canon printers for 8 years now after using HP and Lexmark. The quality and cost per picture are hard to beat. You can buy some models with memory card slots too.

  • Having recently completed this very same exercise for some friends, I would concur with the Canon printers, particularly the 6-colour units, and for all the same reasons. Sensible construction of the printing mechanism results is much lower costs, individual ink tanks means no wasted ink once one colour has run out, and astonishing results particularly with the 6-colour units, that has to specific "photo" inks.

After seeing the results we would have happily paid the extra dollars for the 8-colour unit, had we been able to locate one recently. But in every test and/or comparison we made, the Canon 6-colour gave the best results every time, and sometimes by a significant margin. We settled on the i960.

  • Yeah, FS's 50c a print doesn't look so good any more, except you can upload the prints and then pickup. With Walmart (and I assume SDM) you have to take it in on flash media or CD but that's a small price to pay.

BTW, photolab.ca (Loblaws and related) is 29c each but you can pre-pay $25 for 100. Not sure if this applies to walk-in or only to picking up at the local store a few days later.

  • RE: home printing vs. photo labs...

I rarely do big print jobs and I usually want them on short notice, so I find home printing, while more expensive, to be more convenient (Especially with the stupid "no Sunday shopping" rule here is NS).

I have used Future Shop and SDM's digital processingm and they both do a fine job. I think FS's prints were better, IMHO. FS occasionally puts out coupon code for free prints, as well.

If you're sending prints to the States, you might want to take a look at Snapfish.com and Shutterfly.com... both are offering up to 15 free prints for the price of shipping ($1.79 USD anywhere in the US). They will also ship to Canada, albeit at higher prices.

  • I think Shoppers is supposed to have a provision for pick-up at the store, providing your local branch has a photo lab. I have run into this problem, myself too, and gave up, instead bringing in a burned CD. It might be worth calling the local Shoppers PhotoLab.

Help! I've tried uploading pics onto the Shoppers Drug/Kodak website, but when I come to "Checkout", it asks me for a mailing address only. Isn't there a way for the photos to be picked up at Shopppers' with Photo Labs, or am I missing something? I'm I instead supposed to be bringing in a photo CDROM to that little yellow Kodak machine?? I would like these photos asap, no time to wait for mail!!

As usual Mr. Webber, you assume correct.

  • I second (or third) the recommendations for the Epson Stylus line of printers. I have several pro photographer friends who use them, and love them.

I've had three, and have not had problems with any, and the quality and durability of the prints has been excellent.

    Good luck with the choices!
