Max Bretos, Can be a horrendous commentator.
His call of the 2006 FIFA Club World Cup on the Fox Soccer Channel had been BAD.
He spends almost 90 minutes belittling the team who is not the favored team and talking about the burden being put on the favored teams.(Exception being the Auckland City FC/Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC match, so far...)
I have no allegiances to any of the teams, he finds time to put down, as I am of European descent but I still find my self, feeling angry and disgusted with the lack of respect that he gives these teams.
My viewing experience would be a much more enjoyable one, if Max would just stick to calling the actual game and not spounting off his obvious biases.
If Max ever adopt's a catch phrase, It might be something like this, "If it's not European or South American, then it just isn't soccer"
Thanks for nothing Max, you snob.
"He got hit in the ear, which is pretty painful. My dad used to kiss me on my ear drum, and I'd say, 'Daddy, stop, it hurts!' but he never listened!"
It's been over a day and I still can't stop laughing about this.
Here's the thing (and the primary reason why I am simply unable to make it through a game that Max is calling, and the American dude with Ray Hudson on GolTV also annoys me in this way, but not quite as much as Max: Max isn't Brazilian, I'm not Brazilian, FSC isn't a Brazilian TV station, and so there is no point in attempting to pronounce a Brazilian's name like a Brazilian would if you are a) not Brazilian or b) not speaking to a primarily Brazilian audience.
I know the reasoning is that it's some form of respect by the announcer to attempt to pronounce a player's name the way the player would, but it sounds incredibly tacky, and the player's not hearing it anyways. Where's the respect for the listener who just wants to not be jolted in the middle of a free-flowing sentence by some odd-sounding word.
The worst part about these goofball American announcers (and I'm American, but I notice that it's, the VAST majority of the time, done by Americans, and not English, or native Spanish-speakers in English) is they can't even get the names consistant from sentence to sentence. The effort to be "correct" leads to them not even saying it the same way two times in a row. Why? Because if you don't speak Portuguese fluently, you shouldn't try to say the one Portuguese word in an otherwise 100% English sentence as a Brazilians would, unless you say the English words with the same accent as the Portuguese word.
People like Max would say "Rodriguez" one way if the person was born in New York City and didn't speak a word of Spanish, but they would say "Rodriguez" with an entirely different tone and inflection if it was about a person born in Mexico. That's stupid, because it's the exact same word. Most native Spanish speakers (that I've heard) when calling a game in English don't twist their tongue to say non-Spanish names the way a non-Spanish speaker would. Neither do the English or the Irish or the Scottish (though the guy that does things with Smyth on ESPN did say "Garthia" for Luis Garcia a lot, and I started to wonder if he had a lisp, until I talked with a native Mexican at work about why in the world anyone would ever do this intentionally) generally partake in this stupid practice, so why do Max and the American on GolTV do it? It seems peculiarly American, and it seems just plain stupid.
But then again, there's a lot about Max's commentating that's nearly as bad as his pronunciation, which is why he's by far the worst announcer of any sport on any station that I have ever received via air, satellite or cable, and he's the only announcer on the planet (now that Jack Edwards seems to have disappeared from TV announcing) that will cause me to change the channel.
That is wrong. Tommy Smyth is a thick little, old Irish guy with a cute accent.....
Its just funny how everyone loves to pile on Bretos, but when Tommy Smyth makes an asinine comment, he gets a free pass b/c he is a cute little, old Irish guy with a thick accent..
I also bash him. Thank god Derek Rae is there to put some sense into the broadcast.
I'm from New Jersey, so should I pronounce future NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier's last name the same way I might describe someone's bedroom?
...perhaps because in some regions of Brazil, the letter 'd' is pronounced roughly like an English 'J'.
This was a funny post. I see the comments often though. "Why do they mispronounce "X"s name?". So many people are just used to hearing people's names said a certain way (usually from some English anouncer) and assume that's the correct way. The English anouncers aren't always right. Bretos say's Ronaldino's name closer to the way Brazilians pronounce it (though not totally as I've heard many of my Brazilian friends pronounce the R in his name like an H, so it comes out like "Honalginyo" - and the R is pronounced the same in Ronaldo and Robinho's names as well). Probably the worst in Lyon's Brazilian striker Fred. English anouncers all pronounce it like it rhymes with "dead", but really it's pronounced somewhere in between "wedge" and "Reggie". The English announcers butcher tons of players names, they just all seem to butcher them in the same way so people all are used to hearing them that way.
Life of the Party...

I happen to like Bretos and the above quote is one of the reasons why, but I understand he's not going to make everybody happy. But, do we need yet another thread about the guy? Gee-iminy Christmas.
I agree. He isnt as bad as everyone makes him out to be.

I also like him at times but other times I want to punch him in his face. :D
Yes, We need another thread and one after this one and another until a thread some how finds it's way to Max. (He does have potencial and I'm sure he is looking to improve at his craft)
Believe people, believe in the power of the Big Soccer Forum
Save it, I needed to vent.
Official Max Bretos Thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145725) (started in October 2004)
How many times do I have to come back here and post this link? Maybe it should be stickied. Oh well, at least it's not as bad as the Adu threads.
This Brit guy is an arrogant tosser.
