When did the modern environmental movement begin?

The modern environmental movement started with the publication of Rachel Carssons Silent Spring, on the disastrous effects of DDT on wildlife population. I think that was 1963.

Previously, "environmentalists" focused on the establishment of natural reserves. Whereas these first wave environmentalists considered nature as something outside of civilization, modern environmentalists have focuses on the role of human action on the quality of our direct environment, not just isolated forests and lakes.
