  • Going to Havana

  • Seems the family needs a last minute vacation and my better half wants to go to Havana. Any suggestions on hotels that are reasonably priced :)

So far our searching has not uncovered any decent properties.

Has anybody rented a car in Cuba and driven around? Is that wise?

How smart is it to head to Havana with no hotel bookings and simplying explore?

And last question - can I use Visa / Amex Credit cards in Cuba?

  • KVS - thanks for the information.

As with Parnel's comments - I just think he likes to stir things up - yah know somebody has to play the devil and that's his role.

  • Ah...the eternal debate.

Do economic boycotts effect political change or do they make the situation of the people worse?

  • Ah...the eternal debate.

Do economic boycotts effect political change or do they make the situation of the people worse?

Well if your money goes toward fomenting insurrections elswhere...then the answer is obvious. Castro has done nothing to better the lives of their people.

  • what's the matter newspaper deliveries slow today?

Do you mean you have to read slowly today? I did post one about you great builder of airports, Turpen retiring. Maybe you haven't gotten there yet. ;)

  • Funny others didn't think the English was that hard to fathom, er sorry I should say understand lest you not comprehend the word fathom. And your reply actually proved what I'd said in my earlier post, so thanks parnel. ^

    uh huh

  • Considering Fidel's lifestyle is remarkably Spartan, I would think the money of Canadian visitors is helping line the pockets of a lot of people who need it. Considering that in Arizona your money would line the pockets of some tax-dodging, Bush-loving, vote-buying overpriced hotel chain, I'd say it's better spent in Cuba. Yes, you can go to Arizona and splash in the pool or play golf in a fricken desert where a first rate environmental catastrophe - the drought of the millenium - is unfolding because people will not go without watering their lawn or indulging other unsustainable practices that will ultimately sink the US economy ib a sea of sloth and arrogant self-indulgence.

    :D

When you think of it that way, Fidel ain't so bad.

Spartan compared to what? His slaves who work for peanuts. Castro was named by Forbes Magazine as one of the the top richest dictators in the world and was only behind such luninarires as Saharto and others of tht ilk.

  • I guess those were not rumours if he is really leaving....dumb ...!!

A paper boy who delivers the same paper twice to the same place.............duh!!

They were rumours at the time. @:-)

I will try to go slower if that will help you understand how obtuse you are.

You haven't posted a thread yet that supported your lame memory that something official had already been announced. Here's an portion from today's PR:

TORONTO, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the
GTAA today announced that the Board has accepted with regret the decision of
Mr. Louis A. Turpen to retire as President and CEO effective September 30,
    2004.

  • Parnel and Tcook:
Come on you guys. I am almost hoping that Shore9 posts something soon. At least I can get a laugh out of his stuff.

  • I've had it with your Horses**T..if you want to persist being an ******* here lets go...
A corrupt regime from 45 years ago was taken out by a guy the US supported because he said democracy was his goal; he has since killed 1000's of people who believed in democracy and enriched himself to the point he is now high up on the forbes richest people in the world.

PE had it right......you are just an electonic paper boy here and auseless one at that..

Wow, so much for your supposed desire for quality debate, parnel. Any more four letter words you can use to hide your inability to engage in a meaningful dialogue? But sling your best expletives (that means swears, parnel) because in the end you can only really go with what you know (or think you know).

BTW, everyone here knows, to use your own words, who the real ******* is. ;)

  • At least in Arizona you'll be lining the pockets of many people not just Castro!!

  • Parnel, while I find you contributions to this forum quite valuable, you have really "gone mechanical" on this thread. Before you launch into yet another fast-typed reply, please, please, please, read tcook052's earlier message. It is somewhat obvious that you didn't the first time around. :td:

Its too bad tcook052 cannot write English properly when he's mad or in a hurry to get a slam in. You're right I don't spend a lot of time reading garbage :D

  • The following Canadian travel agent website has some good info on Cuba

    http://www.nashtravel.com/

    Rave on fool

  • Thanks for the links for Nashtravel - have been in contact with them to try and pull something together.

I "misunderstood" my better half and now understand Havana is not the ultimate destination, but is Varadero.

Parnel, if I run into Castro I will be sure to pass along your regards!

  • Maybe I'm slow but I generally remember things....there was another thread about his departure when he first announced it some months back....so maybe its your brain that's slow.
And so far the only interest in the thread is your own response.

Nice try. I searched the threads on Turpen before posting the news release this a.m. to see if there was anything else official on his exit. Guess what--there wasn't, so guess you're memory is as bad as your reading ability.

For the record, here'e two threads from '04 that mention the GTAA boss, both with nothing more than rumours about his departure:

    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22567

    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22522

But if you've something concrete you can use to support your pathetic claim, parnel, go ahead. But that's not how you work is it?

  • mad_atta not a problem - the people at Nashtravel are trying to pull something together for us - I will know tomorrow if the trip is a go!

By the way, my wife went there last year and loved it - hence her desire to go back. Her one compaint was the quality of the food - very poor - very bland, though the food wasn't bad enough that she doesn't want to go again.

Last year she went on a package through AC Vacations - this year I was hoping to go to more than one location - hence the problem with using AC Vacations again.

Parnel will pass your message along :p

  • What a crock! Like the previous regime with the mafia casinos was any better.

More of the same anti-Cuban rhetoric spouted by Jeb and his S. Florida campaign team into his slow brother's ear (that's George Bush, the president parnel--just in case you have troubled following along).

  • If we don't go to Cuba we will probably end up in Arizonia.

Oh my, don't go to Arizona. Cuba is a wonderful place , great music, food , diving etc. Leave Arizona for the octogenarian snow-birds! :D !

  • Did I talk about the place itself or just the politics.......at least get it right before you try your slam dunks

And I never fly business class?.........only on ramp to ramp services..obviously you are full of crap.
40 flts on AC so far this year and 30 in J...is that enough experience or do you want me to list all my flts in F on other airlines as well.........(deleted bad language)

  • back seat, would it be cheeky to request a mini trip report about your experiences in Cuba when you get back? I'm hoping to go next year and I haven't heard many people's experiences...

  • "Cuba is moving to end circulation of the widely used U.S. dollar, a response to tighter American sanctions on the Caribbean island. ...

Cubans and tourists wishing to exchange American dollars will have to pay a 10 per cent commission charge. The exchange charge will not apply to other currencies, including the Canadian dollar. "

  • Back seat, glad you're not going to Cuba...one less dollar in that monster's hands is good for all of us. I know you are not going because of anything political but I'm glad none the less.

    Blarney.

But yes, any holiday is a good holiday when it's with family. Have a good time. ^

  • Parnel and Tcook:
Come on you guys. I am almost hoping that Shore9 posts something soon. At least I can get a laugh out of his stuff.

You know things have gone awry when people start wishing for Shore9 to post ! Anyway it seems that they made up  on another thread........something to do with blarney and the emerald isle ;) .

  • Ins't this rich; here's parnel who always slams some FTers for commenting on biz class despite rarely flying it telling people about Cuba despite never having been there. It's o.k. for him to 'call it as he sees it' but should someone else do the same, they're derided for their opinions. :td: The only difference with this dictatorship is it's not in the U.S.'s back pocket and therefore evil.

BTW, back seat, enjoy your holiday wherever it may take you. :)

  • Parnel - I was wondering if this discussion was going to get any colour to it ;)

I am not a member of any political party - just looking for a different vacation for my guys.

If we don't go to Cuba we will probably end up in Arizonia.

At least in Arizona you'll be lining the pockets of many people not just Castro!!

  • Wow, so much for your supposed desire for quality debate, parnel. Any more four letter words you can use to hide your inability to engage in a meaningful dialogue? Well the PM's I get don't suggest I back down to creeps like you, so have fun. :D

Something you should understand about this board is that many of us have built relationships away from posting here and help each other with travel problems. You provide a valuable service as an "electonic newspaper delivery boy" so keep up the good work.

  • Are you a member of the communist party?

  • Well if your money goes toward fomenting insurrections elswhere...then the answer is obvious. Castro has done nothing to better the lives of their people.

What a crock! Like the previous regime with the mafia casinos was any better.

  • [B] ....- this year I was hoping to go to more than one location - hence the problem with using AC Vacations again.
    ....

I believe that regular AC flights will allow open jaws, so you can fly into Havana and leave from Varadero, or other places. Driving between those two palces is OK as far as I know, not sure about other places. I hear Cubana internal flights are somewhat iffy.

    and the food is bland!

  • this is the same Cahvez who is now trying to raise base oil prices from a range of $20-28 a BBL to $30-$38 a bbl.

And what is wrong with raising prices of a limited and non-renewable resouce? Certainly the sheiks in Alberta would agree, or do you agree with the principle of Trudeau's NEP?

  • Seems the family needs a last minute vacation and my better half wants to go to Havana. Any suggestions on hotels that are reasonably priced :)

Been there done that. Car rental is ok and so is driving around. You should book before you go. In Havana downtown, Vedado, Habana Libre or if you have a car stay in Miramar, beautiful hotels. Call or visit, www.nashtravel.com and speak to Martha. She is good, and by the way, they have the lowest hotel prices. pm me for more info :p

  • Even though my thread was hijacked I still want to update it. Seems the flights on AC to Cuba are full so it off to LAX on Sunday ;)

For me anytime with my kids is a vacation in itself :)

  • Well the PM's I get don't suggest I back down to creeps like you, so have fun. :D

What no foul language this time, parnel? Had your morning pail of java?
Good to hear you're active cultivating your popularity with other FTers, as you no doubt need you massive ego stroked like some stray alley cat. But if it makes you any happier, you win my vote as most popular ****** on the forum.

  • Now that we are all aware of parnel's political opinions on this subject , here are some real answers:

How smart is it to head to Havana with no hotel bookings and simplying explore?Probably not a very good idea, if it is possible at all -- you most likely need a confirmed and prepaid reservation from a tour company/hotel to obtain a Cuban tourist visa...

Just get a packaged holiday -- you can get a 4**** hotel with an all-inclusive meal/drink plan together with flights (on AC/5G/TS) for less than $1 000 CAD/person/week in September.

And last question - can I use Visa / Amex Credit cards in Cuba? You can use any Visa/MasterCard as long as it's not issused by a US bank. AMEX is not accepted.

  • I generally remember things....there was another thread about his departure when he first announced it some months back

Still haven't found that thread, have you? I know, I know, you're slow so I'll give you a few more hours. ;)

  • Parnel - I was wondering if this discussion was going to get any colour to it ;)

  • I'm with Parnel on this one. The only reason why Canadians sing the praises of going to Cuba is because of the cheap all-inclusive vacations. I think I'll pass - I'd rather pay more and vacation on an island like St. Maarten or Aruba where the locals enjoy a high standard of living and everyone has the freedom to enjoy the best of what life has to offer. If I want to experience Cuban culture, I can easily do that in Miami.

  • I know of a couple that rented a car earlier this year. They had the vehicle for 2 weeks. Expect to pay $80-$90 CDN/day including insurance. They travelled on main roads and secondary roads and didn't report any major problems. The one thing they noted was being able to drive for hours on secondary roads and only see a couple other vehicles.

And remember if canada had any kind of real democractic government they would be breaking off diplomatic relations with that guy and would be trying to overthrow him...but enjoy your trip anyway.

  • back seat: Have a good vacation with your family. :)
